Information on Plumbing Career

INFORMATION SHEET ON PLUMBING CAREER

Job Title: Plumber Apprentice.

Requirements: 18 or older, high school diploma from the USA or it's territories or GED certificate, valid California Drivers License and social security card and submit reliable proof of legal right to work in the United States.

Training: On-the-job training plus day-time or evening classes.

Salary: The current labor contract states that the beginning wage for a first year apprentice is $17.95 (effective 7/1/10).

Program: The apprenticeship program is 5 years. The program is sponsor-based which means that you must be sponsored by a union contractor for acceptance. At the conclusion of the training period and if all other requirements are met, the apprentice will upgrade to Journey level.

Skills: Plumbers work with their hands using hand tools, power tools, gas or acetylene torches, etc. They must know mechanical principles and understand how things work. Plumbers need a working knowledge of mathematics and science.

The Work: Plumber's work is strenuous and involves standing, stooping, lifting and squatting. Much of the work is done outdoors and involves joining pipe together by following layouts, diagrams and work orders. Construction work is seasonal and construction sites are sometimes great distances from the home.

Tools: According to the current labor contract, each employee shall provide the following tools: (1) Rule, Tape, (2) Level, (3) Channel Locks, (4) Hammer, (5) Blade Screwdriver, (6) Phillips Screwdriver, (7) 14" and 18" Pipe Wrenches, (8) Striker, (9) 8" and 12" Crescent Wrench, (10) Tube Cutter, (11) Tin Snips, (12) Pencil Reamer, (13) Hacksaw, (14) Torque Wrench, (15) Nail Puller.

How do apply: You must call a Plumber's Local Union in your area for information, or call the Apprenticeship Center at the Employment Development Department in Los Angeles at (213) 833-7900.

You may also apply in person at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Plumbers located at 1111 West James M Wood Blvd. (formerly 9th St.), Los Angeles, CA 90015. Applications are to be made in person only, Monday through Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The office is closed on Fridays

REQUIREMENTS

1. All applicants must be eligible to work in the United States of America (birth certificate/U S Passport) or, as applicable, possess the appropriate current legal work authorization from Homeland Security (Immigration & Naturalization Service).

2. All applicants must have a valid California driver's license.

3. All applicants must be high school graduates, or provide proof of equivalent educational attainment, such as a G.E.D. (General Education Development) certificate.

4. All applicants must be able to read, write and converse in English.

5. All applicants must be in reasonable good health with no handicaps or diseases that would impair their ability to perform the work of the trade or that would be a hazard to them or a fellow worker.

6. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

7. All applicants must have a valid Social Security card.

Bring ONLY original documents and a pen with you when you come to the Apprentice Office to apply.

LOS ANGELES METROPOLITAN PLUMBERS JOINT APPRENTICESHIP COMMITTEE

John C. Hall Apprentice & Journeyman Training Center

The John C. Hall Apprentice & Journeyman (A & J) Training center provides the ultimate in modern scientific and technical training. Professional approaches to learning appear throughout the campus. Techniques of audio and visual training through the media of television and slides have been incorporated in the curriculum.

APPRENTICESHIP A 5-year program of related classes is provided for apprentices in the Irrigation and Lawn Sprinkler, Steamfitter and Industrial Pipefitter, and Plumbing industries.

JOURNEYMEN A series of classes is offered enabling Journeymen to increase their competence levels and learn new skills.

TRAINING A laboratory with twenty-three fully functional stations and the most modern tools and equipment is utilized to provide hands-on training. In addition, state-of-the-art computer aided design (CAD) equipment and facilities are available for an enriched knowledge in the arena of detailing and design.

SAFETY Of utmost importance individually is on-the-job safety. Standard Red Cross First Aid and CPR courses are offered. In addition, safety courses with regard to fellow workers, handling and use of tools and on-the-job precautions are available and included with the Apprenticeship Program curriculum.

INSTRUCTORS The United Association, Washington, D.C., conducts an annual training program at the university in Ann Arbor, MI. Instructors attend for a period of 5 years. Upon completion of the prescribed course, they receive certification as a U A Instructor of Journeymen and Apprentices in the plumbing and pipefitting industry. The instructors work in related fields of the trade and hold current State of California vocational education and other credentials. In addition, instructors attend post-graduate courses.
